Bangladeshi Role Model Project

Sample Poster from the Project

The Bangladeshi Role Model project brings together young people who have aspirations to do particular jobs or careers with people from their own community who are already doing these jobs. We called it the Pathways project because it shows not just what young people can do, but how they can get there.

The project comprises 8 A3 colour posters, with photographs of the young person and the role model and quotations from both. Some quotations are in Bengali. In addition, there is a booklet which includes the full text of the interviews.

The eight young people, four girls and four boys, come from primary and secondary schools in Islington. The role models are: a nurse; a midwife; a computer engineer; a GP; a football coach; a primary teacher; a chemist, and a car designer. All apart from one were brought up in Britain : the car designer, Leepu Awlia, is from Dacca but currently working with the Discovery Channel in London . All their stories make fascinating reading, and his is especially striking.

A set of posters cost £16, while posters plus booklet cost £20.

The Bangladeshi Education Forum was set up in July 2004. Represented on it are members of Bangladeshi and Muslim community organisations, Bengali teachers, and parents from primary and secondary schools. The Forum meets at least once a term and has recently met every half term, at the Barnsbury Centre. It has been active in planning Conferences in June 2005 and 2006 on issues relating to the achievement of Bangladeshi heritage children. Ann Jones is the coordinator for the Forum.
