The term ‘mentor’ has its origins in Greek literature. When Odysseus sailed to join the war against the Trojans, he chose a friend, Mentor, to act as a guide and advisor to his son Telemachus whilst he was away. In this sense, then, mentors will sometimes act like supervisors.
There are now ‘learning mentors’ employed in most of our primary and secondary school under the Excellence in Cities service, but there are also volunteer mentors working with Islington’s students. Cassius Francis previously worked for EMAS as Senior Learning Mentor and now works for EMAS on a consultancy basis. He works in both primary and secondary schools usually on a termly basis.
