This section details the content of our Online Accredited Course which launched in January 2007. You must complete three modules (six units). Modules 1 and 2 are compulsory. You have a choice between Modules 3 and 4. Module 4 is designed to reflect Module 3 but with a strong emphasis on the 'Early Years' phase.
Course fees: £80+VAT per unit or £365+VAT for the full course of three modules (six units).
Assessment: Candidates must complete three (3) full assignments chosen from the units they have studied. A further 3 short tasks must be completed for the remaining three units.

Module 1 (Compulsory)
UNIT 1: Ethnic Minority Achievement: The big picture, from data to actions.
In this unit students will be made aware of the key issues in the national debate in the achievement of minority ethnic pupils. They will be shown the range of national and local data available on the achievement of minority ethnic pupils. Students will learn the most effective ways of analysing and using data for effective action planning.
Outcomes

Students can show their understanding of the key issues in ethnic minority achievement.

Students are able to demonstrate their knowledge of the range of data sources available and can use this data to inform their planning.
UNIT2: Bilingualism and Language Development: Planning for Bilingual Learners
The aim of this unit is to raise awareness of key issues in bilingualism and language development. The importance of first language development will be highlighted, together with the transfer of knowledge and skills. In planning for bilingual learners the focus will be on balancing content with sufficient context, drawing on a range of strategies.

Module 2 (Compulsory)
UNIT 1: Achievement of Pupils of African Caribbean Heritage
In this unit students will consider the key issues in the national and local debate concerning the achievement of students of African Caribbean heritage and the implications this has for our work as educators. The unit will provide practical activities, which enable students to explore these issues.
Outcomes:
UNIT 2: Gender Equality issues
In this unit students will develop an increased understanding of the ways in which different and multiple forms of discrimination impact on boys and girls. The unit will focus on the under achievement of boys in school and will offer strategies to help raise boys' attainment.

Students can show their understanding of the pressures on young people to conform to group norms and gender stereotypes, and strategies to challenge these pressures

Module 3 (Optional choice between modules 3 or 4)
UNIT 1: Refugees and Asylum Seekers
The aim of this unit is to inform students of who refugees and asylum seekers are, why they are here and what factors are likely to effect their social and educational development in this country and in our schools.
Outcomes:

Students will be able to demonstrate a greater awareness and understanding of issues effecting the past, present and future lives of refugee and asylum seeking families

Students will learn of good practice developed in dealing with refugee and asylum seeking children in our schools
UNIT 2: Community Liaison and Empowering Parents
In this unit students will be made aware the importance of supporting parents from ethnic minority communities to gain an understanding of our education system.
They will have an increased knowledge of the ways in which they can work with parents of minority ethnic pupils to develop understanding of how school communities work. They will explore the opportunities and challenges involved in ensuring that parents and community groups are encouraged to contribute fully to school life and to play an important role in working in partnership to support their children’s educational and social development.
Outcomes:
- Students can show their understanding of the main issues for parents of minority ethnic pupils in supporting their children’s education at home and at school.
- Students are better equipped to work in support of schools, parents and communities
Module 4 (Optional choice between modules 3 or 4)
Equality and Diversity in the Early Years.
This module will explore aspects of effective early years practice and provision as it relates to minority ethnic pupils. This will enable students to fully understand and identify theoretical issues and practical strategies for developing inclusive early years practice.
UNIT 1: Meeting the needs of bilingual children in the early years
Outcomes
- students will be familiar with issues relating to the needs of bilingual children in the early years and will feel more confident about meeting those needs within the context of good early years practice
UNIT 2: Exploring practical ways of approaching issues of equality and cultural diversity with young children.
Outcomes
- Students will be aware of the theoretical framework underpinning equalities work in the early years
- Students will have identified and demonstrated practical strategies, activities and resources for organising an inclusive early years environment
