Meeting the needs of Refugees & New Arrivals

Over 3000 pupils in Islington schools joined their school outside standard times. There are around 4,500 pupils in Islington’s schools who are from a refugee background.  In this section you will find guidance and resources that support schools to ensure their integration and achievement.

We have provided detailed pupil mobility management guidance and resource links in this website for all school practitioners working with new arrivals and refugees.

You can also download our summary guidance documents

If you want further information about Islington’s refugee communities, visit Islington Refugee Forum’s website. You can also download the Refugee and Community Handbook 2006 .

For those seeking information on services that are available to refugees and asylum seekers in the borough of Islington, please visit the council's refugee directory.

In April 2008 we held a highly successful national conference entitled: ‘Beyond Induction: Raising the attainment and supporting the integration of all new arrivals’. If you wish to know what the key messages were, then you can download the conference report.

National anti-bullying week is in November. You may wish to download a scheme of work, Teaching about refugees, identity and inclusion: Four lessons for Anti-Bullying Week, that raises awareness about refugees in order to combat bullying and racism.

For Refugee Week 2010 we worked with Islington Council’s Equalities Refugee and Migrant Service to run an art competition for schools and to host the acclaimed ‘Escape to Safety’ exhibition for schools to visit. You can download information and a photographic record of both events:
